ABOUT US

OUR STORY

In December 2019, veteran tour guide Jane Rai founded Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted, a tour brand specialising in heritage walks through Kuala Lumpur's oldest districts, as part of her passion project, Keeping Kuala Lumpur's Heritage Alive. Jane has been leading walking tours in Kuala Lumpur since 1993. Over the past three decades, she has shared her deep knowledge and passion for the city's history, culture, and heritage with locals, visitors, tourist guides and travel agents.

CREATING AWARENESS

‘KEEPING KUALA LUMPURS’S HERITAGE ALIVE’

The project was created to raise awareness among locals about the importance of preserving their heritage. By fostering a deeper appreciation of the city's history and character, it encourages people to speak up when heritage buildings are neglected or threatened with demolition, or when proposed street name changes could alter the identity and character of their neighbourhoods.

Heritage is more than historic buildings—it's also the people, cultures, traditions, and stories that have shaped the city over time. Kuala Lumpur is a city of many colourful layers. Beyond its modern skyline lie historic neighbourhoods, pre-war buildings, vibrant places of worship, and hidden alleyways that capture the city's soul and reveal its rich cultural tapestry.

OUR COMMITMENT

Our team of guides is committed to preserving and sharing the city's unique heritage, ensuring that its untold stories, people, legacies and traditions continue to inspire future generations.

We take you beyond the postcards and into the lively corners of Kuala Lumpur's old districts—where the air carries the aroma of freshly baked egg tarts, roasted coffee, pulled-tea and stories waiting to be told. Whether exploring the legacy of early pioneers or the multicultural mosaic created by today's local traders, we uncover the tales that shaped this city in a way that feels less like a tour and more like a secret shared between friends.

Every day, we guide visitors and locals through quaint streets, hidden lanes, and historic buildings in the city's old districts, bringing its past vividly to life. We reveal the stories behind the city's people and places—how and why communities migrated here, the lives of heroes and villains, the contributions of forgotten pioneers, the significance of its varied architecture, and the many historic events that shaped Kuala Lumpur into the city it is today.

OUR IMPACT

Every step we take is designed to be mindful. As a zero-carbon, family-friendly activity, we are committed to support our local communities and traders operating in the areas of our walks. When you walk with us, you aren’t just seeing historic landmarks, you are engaging with the independent business and residents who keep their heritage alive.

We invite you to bring your curiosity, ask the “weird” questions and experience the authentic, soulful and entirely unforgettable side of the city we call home.

"We want visitors to Kuala Lumpur to experience our passion for preserving the heritage of this city. We want to show them that Kuala Lumpur is a fascinating city and our way of doing it; is to stroll around with them, tell them our stories and support small traditional traders." ~ Jane Rai, Founder of Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted
